Cerberus was the monstrous three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the underworld in Greek mythology. He prevented the living from entering the realm of the dead and stopped the dead from escaping. Cerberus was typically depicted with multiple heads, a serpent's tail, and sometimes with snakes protruding from his body. One of Heracles' Twelve Labors was to capture Cerberus, which he accomplished by subduing the beast with his strength. Cerberus was later returned to the underworld unharmed.
